Settlements: Jewish Communities in the Disputed Territories
between Israel Harel and Mosi Raz
Tuesday 30 June 11:00
at MediaCentral, 8 Harav Kook St. Jerusalem
The existence of the Jewish communities of Judea and Samaria - the "settlements" -
is at the heart of an ongoing debate both within Israeli society and internationally. Both US President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu referred to the settlements in their landmark speeches recently.
Join us to hear two different Israeli perspectives on this topical and controversial issue.
Israel Harel was the chairman and CEO of Yesha Council - the Council of Jewish Communities of Judea & Samaria.
Harel is one of the founders of the community of Sebastia, lives in Ofra, and writes a column for Haaretz newspaper. He established the newspaper Nekuda, creating a space for religious writers who did not find their place in the (secular) popular Israeli press. Many currently prominent religious Israeli journalists, in radio, print and TV, entered the field via Nekuda: Uri Orbach, Bambi Sheleg, Yair Sheleg, novelist Mira Keidar and many more.
Mosi Raz was born in Jerusalem, served in the IDF (finishing as a major) and was one of the first soldiers in Maglan Elite infantry unit. Raz studied economics and accounting at Hebrew University and chaired the Council for Students' Associations. Raz served as a member of the Knesset for Meretz between 2000 and 2003. A well-known activist, Raz has served as secretary-general of Peace Now and director of the non-profit organization Ir Shalem. He is one of the founders of radio Kol Hashalom, an Israeli-Palestinian station that broadcasts programs and music in Hebrew and English.
