Qatar’s Isolation Threatens Hamas’s Funding and Destabilizes the Region

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and other countries cut diplomatic relations with Qatar this morning. By severing ties, the Sunni lead states solidified the Sunni Shiite divide and aligned Qatar with Iran and Hamas.

Eli Avidar, former head of the Israeli delegation to Qatar, will discuss the regional and national effects of Qatar’s increasing isolation. Hamas, aligned with Qatar, will have fewer allies. Hamas’s leadership is scrambling to reassess the regional situation.

Mr. Eli Avidar was responsible for the Israeli Foreign Ministry department developing contacts with Muslim leaders for countries with which Israel had no diplomatic relations. He was the former head of the Israeli delegation to Qatar. Mr. Avidar was a Foreign Policy Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Avidar founded, and is the head of, The Smart Middle East Forum.
