The Saudi Arabia-Egypt Deal & The Peace Treaty with Israel with Former Ambassador to Egypt Itzhak Levanon

April 12, 2016PAST EVENT

The Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram is reporting that Israel and Egypt are discussing the maritime borders between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, following Cairo and Riyadh’s recent deal, transferring control over Sanafir and Tiran, two strategic islands in the Gulf of Eilat to the Saudis.

The agreement is reported to oblige Riyadh to honor all of Egypt’s commitments in its peace treaty with Israel, including the presence of the international peacekeeping force on the islands and freedom of maritime movement in the Gulf of Aqaba.

Itzhak Levanon served as Israel’s ambassador  to Egypt from 2009-2011, at the beginning of the Egyptian revolution. He discussed the latest developments and what they mean for Israel’s security and diplomacy.
