Operation Protective Edge: Muslims in the IDF

August 4, 2014PAST EVENT

Operation Protective Edge has sparked clashes between mostly young Arab-Israelis – who are pro-Palestinian and many of whom are pro-Hamas – clashing with Israeli police in towns and villages around the country. The Knesset Ethics Committee suspended Balad MK Hanin Zoabi from taking part in Knesset debates for six months in response to anti-Israel and pro-Hamas remarks.

Yet there are Muslim (and Christian) Israelis who support the country in general and the military in particular, some of them serving in the IDF and now posted in and around Gaza.  Arab Israelis who serve in the IDF, oppose Arab rocket, tunnel and other terror attacks, and support Israel’s operations against Hamas in Gaza, are a small but growing minority-within-a-minority in Israeli society.

Join us to hear first-hand from some of these former soldiers and their parents about their motivations and influences, experiences and attitudes towards Arab-Israeli identity and citizenship.
