“Most Critical Iranian Elections in 30 Years”

February 23, 2016PAST EVENT
Iranians go to the polls on Friday 26th February to elect a new parliament. Citizens will for the first time elect two crucial government bodies; members of parliament and delegates to the Assembly of Experts, the 88-member body which chooses the Supreme Leader.

While many pro-reform candidates with a more moderate agenda are being disqualified from participating, the outcome of the elections could determine the future of Iran’s relationship with the West; it’s role in the region and the implementation of the nuclear deal. Both reformers and hard-liners believe the election to be “a referendum on the revolution’s future direction”.

Prof. Rabi says these are the most crucial elections for Iran in the last 30 years. He will discuss the effect of the upcoming elections on Iran’s internal affairs, it’s growing involvement in the region in general and the Syrian war in particular; and the country’s commitment to the nuclear deal.

Prof. Uzi Rabi is the director of the Tel Aviv University’s Dayan Center for Middle Eastern Studies. He is an expert on Iran and the Gulf states. His research focuses on oil
policy and the geopolitics of the Middle East.
