Polygamy in Bedouin Society

Israel formally banned polygamy in 1977; however some state institutions, including the National Insurance Institute, still give recognition to such arrangements, allowing women applying for benefits to list their family status as members of “enlarged families”. The practice is common among the Israeli Bedouin community.
