The Ilan and Asaf Ramon International Airport which is due to open in a few months, will be the first civilian airport built in Israel since the founding of the State. The new airport is intended to replace the two others in Eilat; the Eilat J. Hozman Airport in the center of Eilat, and Ovda Airport 60 kilometers north of Eilat. It is also intended to serve as a diversion airport for Israel’s primary airport, Ben Gurion. This airport is intended to serve 4.25 million internal and external tourism passengers annually, according to some reports. This new airport has created ambitious architecture, advanced construction technology hitherto unknown to Israel, and an effort to create a display of environmentalism. Israel’s new 34,000-square-meter Eilat Ramon Airport is located 18 kilometers north of Eilat, and several dozen meters from Jordan.
