Medical Marijuana: Israel’s New “High Tech”

August 30, 2016PAST EVENT

Israel is emerging as a world leader on the science of medical marijuana and its producers could become major exporters, according to industry analysts. The International Medical Cannabis Conference takes place September 11-13 in Tel Aviv highlighting research, technology and business opportunities in the cultivation of marijuana for medical purposes.

In June, Israel approved a plan to ease restrictions on growing medical marijuana and make it more readily available to over 23,000 patients in Israel.  Health Minister Yaakov Litzman is sponsoring a bill removing the limit on the number of approved growers; more doctors will be authorized to issue prescriptions and cannabis will be available in local pharmacies. Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel this week announced that medical marijuana would eventually become an export industry.

The day tour will explore Israeli research, development and potential for turning medical marijuana into a major growth industry.

The tour included:

  • Visit to Prof. Raphael Mechoulam’s lab at the Hebrew University School of Pharmacy. Prof. Mechoulam, an organic chemist, is often referred to as the “Father of Marijuana Research.” He is a pioneer in the field of cannabis research who discovered the endocannabinoid system.

  • Visit to Tikun Olam, the first, largest and foremost supplier of medical cannabis in Israel and one of the leading medical cannabis companies in the world. We will meet with the CEO, staff and patients.

  • Meeting with Ofer Spottheim, general manager of Cann10, organizer of the upcoming International Medical Cannabis Conference in Tel Aviv.

  • Lunch at a restaurant
