Micha Bar-Am is an Israeli journalistic photographer whose photos have covered Israeli life since the state was founded. He immigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1936 and was active in the state’s founding. Since the 1956 Sinai Campaign when he borrowed a camera and a handful of film, and produced his first book “Across Sinai”,he has photographed multiple Israeli wars. Many of his war images brought him renown. Since 1968, he has been a correspondent for Magnum Photos. In 1974 he helped Capa found the International Center of Photography in New York City.
In 1968, Bar-Am became the photographic correspondent from Israel for the New York Times, a position he held until 1992. From 1977-92, he was head of the department of photography at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
Micha Bar-Am will discuss his 60 years of experience in covering every aspect of life in this country. He will present his series of photos from the state’s founding through today witnessing the state’s establishment, highlights, and challenges. He will share his personal story as a German immigrant who immigrated pre-state.
